Friday, July 29, Vilnius - On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Treaty on the Foundations of Inter-State Relations between Lithuania and Russia, President Dalia Grybauskaitė sent a letter of congratulations to President Dmitry Medvedev of the Russian Federation.
According to the President, the Treaty of 29 July 1991 signed by the President of the Supreme Council of the Republic of Lithuania, Vytautas Landsbergis, and the President of the RSFSR, Boris Yeltsin, recognized an independent democratic State of Lithuania and laid an obligation to build Lithuanian-Russian bilateral relations on the basis of friendship, good neighborhood, equality and mutual benefit and in conformity with generally accepted principles of international law.
"This year marks an important date in our bilateral relations. Twenty years ago, Lithuania and Russia chose to follow a path of dialogue, constructive cooperation and respect for freedom and democracy," President Grybauskaitė writes in her letter to the President of the Russian Federation.
According to the President, even today the provisions of the Treaty remain an important commitment for both countries to develop their relations on the basis of democratic values and good will.
